Israel has delayed approving a ceasefire and hostage release agreement with Hamas, accusing the group of backing out of some agreed-upon details. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office issued a statement on January 16, 2025, alleging that Hamas was creating last-minute obstacles, particularly concerning the release of Palestinian security prisoners. According to Israeli officials, Hamas was attempting to change the terms on which certain prisoners were to be released, specifically demanding control over the identities of individuals Israel sees as "symbols of terrorism."

Despite these tensions, senior Hamas officials denied backtracking, stating they remain committed to the agreement reached by mediators. Negotiations, led by Mossad chief David Barnea in Doha, are continuing, with Israeli officials hopeful that the disagreements will be resolved soon.

The deal, brokered by the US and Qatar, calls for the gradual release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and includes provisions for a six-week ceasefire. Under the deal, 33 hostages are expected to be released in the first phase, with Israel beginning a withdrawal from some areas in Gaza, including the Netzarim Corridor. The second phase, starting after 42 days, is expected to lead to the release of the remaining 65 hostages.

Internal Israeli political dynamics, including pressure from far-right members of the government, have complicated the approval process, with some ministers threatening to quit if the war ends. Nonetheless, the agreement's details are expected to be finalized soon.
