India’s Passport Climbs Global Rankings; US and UK Slip in Power List

India’s passport has made notable progress in the latest Henley Passport Index 2025, now offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 60 countries. While Asian nations dominate the top spots, traditional leaders like the United States and United Kingdom have slipped in the rankings.

Currently ranked 77th, India allows its citizens access to destinations across Africa and South-East Asia, often through simplified visa-on-arrival or e-visa processes. Travel privileges vary — from 7–15 days in countries like Iran and the Philippines, to unlimited stays in Nepal and Bhutan.

According to the report, 26 nations offer visa-free entry to Indian passport holders, 38 provide visa-on-arrival facilities, and 41 accept e-visas. This brings the total count of countries with easy visa access to over 100.

While India’s current rank is an improvement from last year, it still falls short of its all-time best of 71st place in 2006. In South Asia, Bhutan ranks 84th, followed by Sri Lanka (91st), Bangladesh (94th), Nepal (95th) and Pakistan (96th). China stands higher at 60th place, offering access to 83 destinations.

Globally, Singapore holds the top spot with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 193 destinations, followed closely by Japan and South Korea at 190. Experts attribute Asia’s dominance to strong international relations, robust economic ties, and global connectivity.

Meanwhile, the US and UK, once leaders in passport strength, have steadily dropped over the past decade. The US now ranks 10th, trailing behind 33 other nations in terms of global mobility.
