India on Tuesday advised its nationals in Nepal to remain vigilant and comply with local guidelines after violent protests erupted across the country a day earlier, leaving at least 19 people dead and more than 300 injured.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it was closely watching the developments in Nepal, where unrest broke out following a nationwide ban on social media platforms including Facebook, X, YouTube and 23 others. The ban, announced by the government of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, was withdrawn late Monday night after widespread demonstrations.

“We are monitoring the situation in Nepal and are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of young lives,” the MEA said in a statement. It also extended condolences to the families of those killed and expressed wishes for the recovery of the injured.

Security forces and protesters clashed across multiple cities after the ban triggered anger over restrictions on digital access and alleged curbs on free expression. Despite the withdrawal of the ban, demonstrations continued into Tuesday, with protesters demanding accountability for the deaths.

Images from Kathmandu showed crowds gathering during a government-imposed curfew, raising slogans against the authorities over the killings during anti-corruption protests.

“As a close neighbour, we hope that concerns will be addressed through dialogue and restraint,” the MEA added.

The curfew remained in effect in several urban centers on Tuesday as Nepal’s government attempted to restore order and prevent further escalation.
