India unveils $2 trillion five-year global trade engagement

India has outlined an ambitious $2 trillion procurement roadmap spanning five years, with the United States expected to contribute $500 billion, about a quarter of the total, across key strategic sectors.
India has announced a large-scale procurement strategy worth $2 trillion over the next five years, signaling a major expansion in its long-term import planning and global trade engagement. A senior trade official indicated that the United States is poised to supply goods and services worth $500 billion under this framework, accounting for 25% of the total procurement outlay.
The plan marks a shift from short-term, annual import arrangements to a structured, multi-year trade approach. By adopting a five-year horizon, India aims to ensure supply stability, strengthen strategic partnerships, and align imports with its long-term infrastructure and industrial development goals.
Under the proposed framework, the US will play a central role as a strategic supplier, particularly in high-value and technology-driven sectors. These include energy resources, aircraft and aviation-related systems, and semiconductor components—areas where American firms hold strong capabilities and global market presence.
Officials suggest that the scale of the procurement plan reflects India’s expanding economic requirements, modernization efforts, and push to secure advanced technologies. The initiative is also expected to support supply chain resilience and deepen bilateral economic ties between India and the United States.
At $2 trillion, the procurement roadmap stands among the largest trade-linked commitments outlined by India, underscoring the country’s growing influence in global trade and its intent to build long-term, sector-focused international partnerships.
