Officially under production, the much awaited Harry Potter television series promises to revive J.K. Rowling's enchanted world with a new cast and more extensive storytelling. The series, which is only available on HBO, is reportedly costing $100 million every episode, making it one of the most costly television programs ever produced. Its projected seven-season budget could total an incredible $4.2 billion, more than even The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video.

The Harry Potter TV Series: What Will It Cover?

The seven Harry Potter books are faithfully adapted in the HBO series, which focusses on a different book every season. The path of Harry Potter, an orphan who learns he is a wizard and enrols in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, will be examined. Voldemort, the evil wizard determined to rule the wizarding world, confronts Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione.

The number of seasons and the date of release

In 2027, the first season of Harry Potter will debut, commemorating the publication of the first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, thirty years earlier. The show will last for seven seasons, according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who also stated that the project will take ten years to finish.

The Function of J.K. Rowling in the Series

Although she is an executive producer, J.K. Rowling is not scripting the series. Rowling said she was confident HBO would keep faithful to the books, adding that the long-form format would provide "depth and detail" that the original films could not. Additionally, HBO executives have highlighted her active participation in choosing the creative team.

Cast and Characters

The casting for the new series has been one of the most anticipated reveals. Here’s the confirmed main cast:

  • Dominic McLaughlin – Harry Potter
  • Alastair Stout – Ron Weasley
  • Arabella Stanton – Hermione Granger
  • John Lithgow – Albus Dumbledore
  • Paapa Essiedu – Severus Snape
  • Janet McTeer – Minerva McGonagall
  • Nick Frost – Rubeus Hagrid
  • Paul Whitehouse – Argus Filch
  • Lox Pratt – Draco Malfoy
  • Bel Powley – Petunia Dursley
  • Daniel Rigby – Vernon Dursley
  • Rory Wilmot – Neville Longbottom
  • Louise Brealey – Madam Rolanda Hooch
  • Anton Lesser – Garrick Ollivander

The actor playing Voldemort has not yet been announced.

Nick Frost, the new Hagrid, has promised a unique but respectful interpretation of the beloved character previously portrayed by Robbie Coltrane.

Production and Filming Location

Filming is taking place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, UK — the same iconic location where the original films were shot. This choice suggests the series will maintain the visual essence of the Wizarding World while introducing new elements and details from the books.

Creative Team

The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television, with Mark Mylod (known for Succession, Game of Thrones, The Last of Us) directing multiple episodes. Francesca Gardiner, who has written for Succession and His Dark Materials, serves as the showrunner.

Where to Watch

The Harry Potter TV series will stream exclusively on HBO and HBO Max starting in 2027. Fans can revisit the original eight films and Fantastic Beasts movies on the same platform ahead of the series’ release.
