Google is taking its visual storytelling game up a notch with the introduction of an AI-powered photo-to-video feature on Google Photos and YouTube Shorts. Android users can now transform their still images into dynamic, remixable video clips with just a single tap.
What’s New?
The new photo-to-video tool automatically converts selected photos into 6-second video clips with smooth transitions and music — no manual editing required. This update leverages Google’s Veo 2 generative AI technology, previously introduced with Gemini, to create short, shareable videos directly within Google Photos and integrate them seamlessly into YouTube Shorts.
Remix Tool for Creative Styles
Alongside this, Google has launched a Remix feature for Android and iOS users, allowing photos to be reimagined in styles like 3D animation, comic art, and sketches. Both photo-to-video and Remix tools will be accessible under a new ‘Create’ tab in the Photos app, consolidating creative options like collages and highlight videos into one hub.
Google notes that these features are experimental and could produce varied results. All AI-generated content will carry an invisible SynthID watermark and visible AI labels for transparency. Users can also provide feedback using a thumbs-up or thumbs-down rating system.
AI Playground for YouTube Shorts
YouTube Shorts is also getting AI-powered visual effects. Through the new AI Playground, users can turn doodles into polished visuals or use creative filters — such as swimming effects or appearing twice in a frame. The AI Playground can be accessed via the sparkle icon in the Shorts camera and is currently rolling out in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Google Photos Evolves Beyond Storage
This update reflects Google’s ambition to transform Google Photos from a simple backup solution into a creative playground for users. By turning still images into videos and remixes, Google is tapping into the growing demand for short-form, social-friendly content.
The photo-to-video and Remix features are live for Android users today, with iOS support coming soon. The tools are free and available to anyone with a backed-up Google Photos library.
