From Mexican Immigrant to New Orleans Mayor: Who is Helena Moreno, the City’s New Leader?
Former journalist and council member Helena Moreno wins New Orleans mayoral election with 55% votes. Know her journey, background, and plans for the city.
Helena Moreno, former journalist and city council member, becomes the first Mexican-born mayor of New Orleans.

The new mayor of New Orleans is Helena Moreno, a former city councilor and journalist. In the election held on Saturday, she garnered 55% of the votes. The 48-year-old Democrat will succeed LaToya Cantrell, the present mayor, who will have left the office by January 2026.
By using the efficient city services, public safety, and economic development as main themes, Moreno's campaign was able to communicate effectively with the voters, and the messages indeed resonated with the electorate who were in search of stable leadership after the previous political turmoil.
🗳️ Election Outcome and Political Context
Preliminary results from the office of the Louisiana Secretary of State show that Moreno was the victor of the three candidates and hence there was no need for him to participate in a runoff election. The other two candidates defeated by Moreno were Oliver Thomas, a council member and state senator, and Royce Duplessis.
LaToya Cantrell, the outgoing mayor, made history as the first woman to govern New Orleans and is now completing her last term. She was not allowed to seek re-election due to term limits. Her second term in office was plagued by controversies such as federal corruption charges and a failed recall petition in 2022. In August, she was charged with the crime of hiding a romantic relationship with a security guard, but she denies it and has also pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction of justice.
💼 A Campaign Rooted in Reform
Helena Moreno's campaign was the most expensive one, with more than ₹28 crore being raised. Her message of accountability and rejuvenation was well received in most neighborhoods. Moreno committed to fighting crime, increasing public safety, providing jobs, and updating the city's infrastructure—areas she has promoted since her time on the New Orleans City Council.
👩💼 Who is Helena Moreno?
Moreno had her origins in Mexico but at the age of eight, she along with her family relocated to the U. S. The early 2000s saw her working as a television reporter in New Orleans, where she made very strong ties with the local people even before she entered politics and built a career in that field.
In the year 2010, she gained election for the 93rd District of the Louisiana House of Representatives, including the famous Treme neighborhood and the beautiful Garden District area, as well as Central City, St. Roch, the French Quarter, and the northern part of the city.
Moreno was an active advocate for women's rights; she featured in the Oscar-winning documentary Five Awake, which chronicled her battle against domestic violence. She is also recognized for her contributions to the areas of criminal justice reform, healthcare, education, and elder care.
At present, the Climate and Sustainability and Economic Development committees of the City Council are headed by Moreno, and she has also previously served on committees dealing with utilities, technology, and budgeting.
Moreno, who holds a Journalism degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, resides in Uptown New Orleans with her husband, Chris Meeks.
