Doom: The Dark Ages Set to Launch on May 15 for Consoles and PC — What to Expect
Doom: The Dark Ages launches May 15 on PS5, Xbox, and PC, bringing brutal medieval combat, new weapons, and an enhanced Glory Kill system.
Bethesda Softworks and id Software are gearing up to launch Doom: The Dark Ages on May 15, bringing a bold new direction to the iconic first-person shooter franchise. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and will also launch day-one on Xbox Game Pass.
Departing from the fast-paced, aerial combat of its predecessors, Doom: The Dark Ages introduces a grim, medieval setting with brutal, grounded combat. Described as a dark fantasy/sci-fi experience, the third entry in the modern Doom saga serves as a prequel to Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal (2020), delving into the origins of the Slayer as he battles the demonic legions of Hell in a more cinematic and visceral world.
A Medieval Spin on Doom's Signature Mayhem
Powered by the latest idTech engine, The Dark Ages retains the franchise’s hallmark intensity and over-the-top violence, now reimagined through a medieval lens. Players can expect revamped combat mechanics, including a significantly enhanced Glory Kill system. Unlike previous games that relied on scripted animations, the new system offers fluid, unscripted executions, aligning better with the fast and savage flow of combat.
New Weapons and War Machines
The Slayer’s arsenal will blend the old with the new. Classic favorites like the Super Shotgun return, joined by brutal new additions such as the Shield Saw. Players can also command devastating war machines, including a towering Atlan mech and a fierce Mecha Dragon, offering larger-than-life moments amid the chaos.
In a statement on its official website, id Software said:
"As the super weapon of gods and kings, shred enemies with devastating favourites like the Super Shotgun while also wielding a variety of new bone-chewing weapons, including the versatile Shield Saw. Players will stand and fight on the demon-infested battlefields in the vicious, grounded combat the original DOOM is famous for."
With its darker tone, new mechanics, and an immersive medieval world, Doom: The Dark Ages promises to be a bold evolution of the franchise while staying true to its roots.
