After the White House announced that US President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a disorder that impairs blood flow in the veins, worries about his health have grown. Vascular specialists have issued a warning about possible complications should the President's condition worsen, despite officials emphasising that he is still "fit and in excellent condition."

What Medical Professionals Say About Trump's Health

Untreated CVI can result in swelling, skin thickening, dryness, and even wounds that don't heal, according to Mimmie Kwong, an associate professor of vascular surgery at UC Davis Health. This may result in amputations in extreme circumstances. She also cautioned that people with CVI are more likely to develop the dangerous blood clot known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

CVI can be treated with medical procedures like phlebectomy, ablation, or sclerosant injections, as well as lifestyle modifications like leg elevation, staying active, and compression stockings.

Trump's Public Presence Amid Health Concerns

Following the online trend of hashtags such as "Where is Trump?" and "Trump is dead," speculation regarding Trump's health grew more intense. The 79-year-old president was seen on camera on his way to his golf club in Virginia on August 30 after departing the White House with his grandchildren, Kai and Spencer Trump.

Photos of Trump's swollen and bruised hand, which initially caught people's attention in July 2025, served as the catalyst for weeks of rumours. According to reports at the time, the bruises were covered up with makeup.

White House Reaction

The White House denied rumours of a serious illness, attributing Trump's bruises to "frequent, forceful handshakes" and aspirin use. Karoline Leavitt, the press secretary, reaffirmed that the President is "fit and healthy," citing CVI as the root cause.

Additionally, White House physician Sean Barbarella clarified in a memo that Trump has "no signs of heart failure, kidney disease, or systemic illness," but rather only mild leg swelling.

Vice President JD Vance added fuel to the public debate over Trump's health when he said he is ready to take over as president "in the event of a terrible tragedy."
