In response to the Dalai Lama’s recent reaffirmation that his reincarnation tradition will continue, China has reiterated its long-held position that the selection of the Tibetan spiritual leader's successor must be approved by Beijing — using a centuries-old “golden urn” system.

🔴 China on Dalai Lama’s Successor: “Only Central Government Can Decide”

During a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated:

“The reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, Panchen Lama, and other great Buddhist figures must be chosen by drawing lots from a golden urn and be approved by the central government.”

The “golden urn” method refers to a practice introduced during the Qing dynasty in the late 18th century to officially select Tibetan spiritual leaders under imperial authority.

🧘 Dalai Lama Reaffirms Continuation of Reincarnation Tradition

The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, who fled Tibet in 1959 after a Chinese crackdown, recently reaffirmed that the 600-year-old tradition of choosing a reincarnated successor will continue.

His statement came as a reassurance to Tibetans worldwide, who are concerned about spiritual and cultural leadership after his death.

🕊️ Beijing Views Dalai Lama as ‘Separatist’

While the Dalai Lama advocates for peaceful autonomy, Beijing regards him as a separatist. China maintains strict control over religious institutions and insists that Tibetan Buddhism must align with Chinese culture and values.

Mao Ning defended Beijing’s stance:

“Tibetan Buddhism was born in China and carries Chinese characteristics. The survival of any religion lies in adapting to the country’s social environment and cultural traditions.”

She emphasized that China has laws regulating religious affairs and maintains freedom of religious belief within those boundaries.
