Columbus Day & Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2025: What’s Open and Closed on October 13

The federal holiday established in 1892 was known as Columbus Day. Traditionally, it is supposed to commemorate Italian-American heritage, as well as the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas. In memory of the day, some cities continue to celebrate it with parades and other community events.

In recent years, however, Indigenous Peoples' Day has drawn national attention. The holiday is meant to celebrate Native American history, culture, and resilience, while also acknowledging the pain inflicted by colonization.

In 2021, the first-ever Presidential Proclamation was issued by President Joe Biden in recognition of Indigenous Peoples' Day, still observed on the same date as Columbus Day. While not a federal holiday, several states and cities recognize it officially.

What Will Be Closed on Monday, October 13, 2025

🏦 Banks

Most major banks would close for the holiday, including Capital One, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, PNC, Truist, Citibank, and JPMorgan Chase.

In contrast, Capital One Cafés will be open for consumers.

📬 Post Offices

The U. S. Postal Service has announced that all post offices would close for retail business and no regular mail will be delivered to residences or businesses on Monday.

The lone exception is Priority Mail Express, which is delivered every day of the year, holidays included.

🏛️ Government Offices

All federal offices, most courts, and any other non-essential government agencies will close for Columbus Day.

🚚 Shipping and Delivery

Good news if you're expecting some packages:

Delivery and pick up at UPS would be operating as usual, and UPS Stores would be open.

FedEx will also conduct pick up and delivery as usual, with FedEx Office stores being open.

🛒 Assisted Stores

Almost all major stores, grocery stores, and restaurants will be open for business during their regular hours. Some offers might be Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day sales, especially for home goods, electronics, and apparel.

The Bigger Picture

The two days, Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day, stand for a shift in how Americans consider history. Whereas one stands for exploration and heritage, the other asks for recognition, reconciliation, and honor for Native communities.
