China showcased a new generation of armed, four-legged robots—dubbed "robot wolves"—at a recent military parade in Beijing, attended by world leaders including Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Pakistan’s Shehbaz Sharif, and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. These robots, designed to potentially replace human soldiers, were a key highlight of the event, which marked the 80th anniversary of China's victory over Japanese forces in World War II.

Next-Generation Battlefield Technology

The new robots are an upgrade from previous iterations, designed for enhanced stealth and precision on rough terrain. State media reports that these "wolves" can "stealthily approach enemies, fire precise shots on targets, and work in rough terrain."

A video from China's state-owned CCTV showed the robots marching alongside tanks, demonstrating their ability to:

  • Carry rifles on their backs.
  • Climb stairs and navigate various terrains.
  • Carry heavy gear.
  • Launch precision attacks from up to 100 meters away.

Pack Mentality and Global Implications

According to state media, these robots are also being developed with a "pack" mentality, where they can divide tasks and coordinate with each other. A "pack leader" would identify targets and transmit data, while others would be assigned to carry out the attacks.

Experts believe this display is a clear message about China's growing focus on robotics in defense. Chong Ja Ian, a professor at the National University of Singapore, told AFP that the new robots "could signal that the future battlefield will be more automated and deadly." He added that such displays are meant to "instill national pride domestically, but also to intimidate potential adversaries externally."

China has heavily invested in robotics, with some experts suggesting the country might already hold an advantage over the United States in this field. Earlier versions of these robots were seen at an air show last year and in recent war games with countries like Cambodia.
