Universal and Amblin’s latest dinosaur blockbuster, Jurassic World Rebirth, is gearing up to dominate theaters this Fourth of July weekend, aiming to earn between $100 million and $125 million over the extended holiday. Opening early on Wednesday, the film kicks off the five-day holiday stretch.
However, despite its massive hype, Rebirth is projected to fall short of the blockbuster heights reached by the previous Jurassic World trilogy. The original 2015 reboot raked in a staggering $208 million during its opening weekend, followed by Fallen Kingdom with $148 million in 2018 and Dominion earning $145 million in 2022 — all within just three days.
This seventh entry in the beloved franchise stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali. Directed by Gareth Edwards and penned by David Koepp, Rebirth takes a fresh approach, focusing on a covert mission to retrieve dinosaur DNA linked to a groundbreaking heart disease cure. While critical response is mixed, some praise the film’s darker, more suspenseful tone, noting it harkens back to Steven Spielberg’s original 1993 classic.
The film’s $180 million budget means Universal doesn’t necessarily need a billion-dollar haul for success, but strong box office momentum will be key to launching a new trilogy in this long-running series.
Also in theaters, Brad Pitt’s racing drama F1 enters its second weekend with an expected $30-$35 million, maintaining strong momentum after a $57 million debut. Despite its hefty $250 million production cost, F1 is on track to become Apple’s highest-grossing film, surpassing Ridley Scott’s Napoleon.
As Jurassic World Rebirth roars into theaters, audiences and studios alike will be watching closely to see if this new chapter can kickstart another era of dinosaur dominance.
