Bangladesh interim government’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Saturday confirmed the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the killing of a Hindu youth in the Mymensingh district, an incident that has triggered widespread outrage.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Yunus said the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested seven individuals allegedly involved in the death of 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, a follower of Sanatan Dharma, in Valuka area of Mymensingh.
“The Rapid Action Battalion has conducted coordinated operations at multiple locations and arrested seven suspects linked to the incident,” Yunus said.
The persons who were taken into custody are that Md Limon Sarkar (19), Md Tarek Hossain, Md Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali (39), Nijum Uddin (20), Alomgir Hossain (38), and Md Miraj Hossain Akon (46).
As per news and other media sources, Das was reportedly throttled to death and then burnt along with his accusations. The interim government in its statement on 19 December very firmly condemned the incident and gave the assurance that the ones responsible would be facing heavy punishments. “The executioners of this monstrous crime will be made accountable,” read the statement.
The murder drew quite a few protests in various parts of Bangladesh, and the authorities responded by strengthening security in the most vulnerable places.Visuals from Dhaka showed military personnel standing guard amid demonstrations following the incident.
The occurrence has received comments from India too. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra advised the Indian administration to pay attention to what she called the growing violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh. In a message on X, she termed the murder “very shocking” and urged the government to bring up the matter of the safety of Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists with the authorities.
Assam government spokesperson Piyush Hazarika condemned the attack as “barbaric,” while the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council also issued a statement strongly denouncing the killing and demanding justice.
