Android 16 takes a stand against phone scams using smart AI and tighter call controls

During The Android Show: I/O Edition on Tuesday, Google unveiled android 16 privacy
features release, designed to help protect users from falling victim to fraudulent phone calls.
These android 16 security features aim to prevent the actions that scammers typically use to
make calls, especially when people are tricked into granting access to their devices or
applications.
Blocking sensitive actions during calls
Smartphones that run Android 16 will now restrict certain actions when users are calling
someone not on their contact list. This includes preventing the first-time sideloading of apps
through messaging apps, browsers, or file-sharing service while on the phone.
The setting also stops users from granting access permissions to applications during calls. If a
user attempts to carry out these actions, Android will show a warning that reads "This setting is
blocked for Google phone call scam protection."
Screen sharing is a risk for users when screen sharing banking apps
Google has also been testing an option in the UK that prevents users from using certain banking
apps, such as Monzo, NatWest, and Revolut and the screen is shared during calls. If a user
attempts to connect to any of these apps, Android shows a warning message about the possibility
of a "likely scam" and gives the option to end the call right away or wait for 30 seconds before
continuing.
AI-based scam detection for calls
Google is expanding its device AI scam filter detection feature, as well. The android scam
detection analyzes conversations in real-time (without recording or saving them) to identify
warning signs such as requests for cash transfers or information about personal details. If
something suspicious is detected the phone will alert users via audio, haptic and on-screen
warnings that suggest they stop the call.
Smarter scam detection in messages
The Messages app has received a scam protection android update. With the help of AI on the
device, it is now able to flag and warn users of possible fraudulent messages in SMS MMS,
SMS, and RCS. The system works automatically when chats contain numbers that are not known
and users have the option to ignore, report or remove the sender.
