Barah Kalan village in Jind district is in mourning after learning that 26-year-old Kapil Sharma, a resident of the village, was shot dead in California, United States, on Saturday.
Kapil, the son of farmer Ishwar Sharma, had two sisters, one married, and was their only brother, village officials said.
According to locals, Kapil left India around two and a half years ago, reportedly spending close to Rs 45 lakh to reach the US through the “dunki route.” Villagers said he was detained shortly after crossing the Mexico border but was later released and settled in the US, taking up work as a security guard.
Suresh Gautam, Sarpanch of Barah Kalan, told reporters that the fatal incident occurred during a dispute over a man urinating in a prohibited area. “Kapil intervened to stop the man, and an argument escalated. During the confrontation, Kapil was shot,” Gautam said. He added that the news reached the village on the same day.
The sarpanch further stated that local authorities would approach the Jind Deputy Commissioner to request the prompt repatriation of Kapil’s body to India.
Meanwhile, the Sadar Police Station (Jind) SHO, Inspector Baljeet Singh, said that the police had not received official information regarding the incident yet.
