Monica Akkineni, a 15-year-old student from Abu Dhabi and native of Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, has earned global recognition by winning the prestigious Shaikh Zayed Sustainability Award. Monica's innovative project, CarbonSponge, introduces a revolutionary biodegradable solution designed to enhance air quality and reduce CO2 emissions in classrooms.

CarbonSponge, crafted from coconut fiber and natural rubber infused with carbon-absorbing algae, stands out as an eco-friendly approach to tackling indoor pollution. Monica, along with her classmate Muskan Maheshwari from Merryland International School, developed the project. Their work was honored in the Global High Schools category of the award.

The award ceremony, graced by UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed, along with other royals and dignitaries, was a proud moment for Monica and her family. She received the accolade personally from Shaikh Mohammed, describing it as "a moment of immense pride."

Highlighting the need for environmental awareness, Monica emphasized the role of youth in addressing climate challenges. The award is part of a global initiative aimed at tackling the climate crisis, offering $1 million prizes in categories such as health, food, energy, water, and climate action. Schools in six global regions, including Merryland International, were eligible for a $150,000 prize in the high school category.

Monica is the daughter of Bhupesh and Sweety, both software engineers based in Abu Dhabi. Her achievement is a testament to the innovative spirit of young minds working towards a sustainable future.
