Visakhapatnam Steel Plant staff to go on strike on May 6 over wage revision

Visakhapatnam: THE employees of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant will take part in a 24-hour strike beginning 6 am of May 6 along with their counterparts in Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) to insist on wage revision with effect from January 1, 2017.

Earlier, all the trade unions had served a notice last month to go on an indefinite hunger strike anytime from March 25 to protest against the decision of the Centre to privatise Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, the corporate entity of VSP. Now the employees will strike work for a day over wages. Recognised union president J Ayodharam said they had decided to go on strike after lukewarm response from the managements of SAIL and RINL to revise the wages. He said they were insisting on a minimum guaranteed benefit of 17 per cent and revision once in five years.

Member-unions of Ukku Poarata Pariraskhana Committee including INTUC, AITUC, CITU and YSRC Trade Union served the notice on the management and the Central Labour Commissioner on Tuesday.
