T-shirts get Cheriyal touch on Handlooms Day

Hyderabad The fusion of Geographical Indications with diverse products is a step towards creating new business opportunities. The State got to witness the rise of a new business on the National Handlooms Day, observed on Monday. T-shirts with Cheriyal art hand-painted by artisans was launched in the city.

Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary for Information Technology, Electronics & Communications (ITE&C) and Industries & Commerce Department, Government of Telangana launched the T- Shirts with artwork hand-painted by Cheriyal artisans. Subhajit Saha, president, IPRAS, Janaki Mandala, Joint Secretary and Noel Robinson Michael, Treasurer of IPRAS, were present. Ancient painting styles of India are celebrated worldwide. One such painting style is Cheriyal art. Cheriyal is a small village in the State of Telangana. Generally, Cheriyal paintings are pictorial presentation of scenes from Indian mythological epics.

In the present day, two Cheriyal artists Madhu and Rakesh Kumar along with their families are keeping the art alive. After having learnt the technique from their father, both the artists have revitalized the art form to preserve it for the future.
