Vijayawada/Visakhapatnam: Anticipating a rise in demand and growth in economic activity following restructuring of existing 13 districts to 26 from April 4, the power utilities are gearing up to meet the impending surge in the electricity consumption.

Officials are of the view that there is every possibility of increasing economic activity in the newly formed districts, especially at the district headquarters, division headquarters and other important areas leading to increase in demand for electricity across the State and 24 x7 quality power supply in particular. Providing

24x7 quality power supply with enhanced consumer satisfaction is important as this will play a key role in accelerated growth of the economy. Power tariffs have been enhanced from April 1.

In fact, the demand for electricity is increasing drastically year on year. The energy demand in the State was 58,704 million units (MU) in 2017-18 which increased to 68,905 MU in 2021-22 with an increase of 10,200 MU (17.3 per cent increased) compared to FY 2017-18. It is expected to reach the demand to 70,705

MU for the period FY 22-23 with an expected rise of 2.6 per cent (1,800 MU) compared to FY 2021-22.

In view of creation of new districts in the State, the government has directed the power utilities to lay more focus on strengthening of 24X7 uninterrupted power supply and develop power infrastructure keeping the future requirements in mind. This move is expected to help increase the overall power supply reliability and quality level in the state and provide the benefits to electricity consumers and State as well.

As a developing State, Andhra Pradesh will see a substantial growth and urbanisation in coming days which will drive up the demand for electricity manifold necessitating the strengthening of 24x7 uninterrupted quality power supply and a healthy, efficient, robust and consumer centric power sector, according to a press release.

The daily average demand in March 2018 was 179.64 MU per day which went up to 220.44 MU per day in March-2022. The daily average demand is expected to rise to 240 MU per day in March-2023. The peak demand in March is expected to escalate to 13,000 MW for FY 22-23, which was 12032 MW (megawatts) in FY 21-22.
