Trump’s 25% Tariff Threatens to Make iPhone 17 Pro Max the Costliest Ever in the U.S
Apple’s iPhone 17 faces steep price hikes in the U.S. after Trump imposes 25% tariffs on Indian imports. Foxconn exports hit $3.2B.
U.S.-India Trade Tensions May Drive iPhone 17 Prices to Record Highs

U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% import tariff on goods from India, a decision expected to sharply raise prices for American tech buyers—including Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 series.
Apple, which has steadily increased its India-based iPhone production to reduce reliance on China, now faces fresh challenges as the tariffs threaten to push retail prices of the new lineup to record highs. Analysts warn that if the costs are passed on to consumers, the iPhone 17 Pro Max could be priced as high as $2,300 (≈ ₹1.9 lakh) in the U.S., potentially making it the priciest iPhone to date.
📦 Apple’s India Shift Under Pressure
Over the past year, Apple has shifted 15% of its global iPhone production to India, largely through its contract manufacturer Foxconn, in a bid to sidestep hefty duties on Chinese goods. But with a 54% duty on Chinese imports already in place and now an additional tariff on Indian exports, the company’s strategy faces a critical roadblock.
Between March and May 2025, Foxconn shipped $3.2 billion worth of iPhones from India, with 97% headed directly to the U.S., according to Reuters customs data. In May alone, shipments reached nearly $1 billion, the second-highest monthly total after March’s $1.3 billion record.
Previously, Apple’s India exports were spread across Europe, including the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and the UK. The sharp pivot to U.S.-bound shipments underscores Apple’s urgency to protect its American market share amid intensifying trade tensions.
🌍 Broader Trade Impact
The move signals a further deterioration in U.S.-India trade relations, with ripple effects likely to be felt across the global manufacturing supply chain. Analysts say higher tariffs may not only impact iPhones but also electronics, textiles, and auto components exported from India to the U.S.
With the iPhone 17 launch expected later this year, industry watchers will closely track Apple’s pricing strategy—whether it absorbs the cost hike or passes it directly to consumers, a move that could redefine premium smartphone pricing in the U.S.
