New Delhi: Under the umbrella scheme Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY), as many as 540 projects have been approved and 399 completed, resulting in creation of 86.06 lakh metric tonne (LMT) processing and 22.63 LMT preservation capacities.
This information was recently given by Minister of State (MoS) for Food Processing Industries Shobha Karandlaje in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. A total of 178,781 employment opportunities have been generated in the last four years - that is, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24 (till January 31).
The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has been implementing the PMKSY since 2017-18 across the country. PMKSY is a comprehensive package of component schemes, which is aimed at creation of modern infrastructure with efficient supply chain management from farm gate to retail outlet, an official release said.
The scheme is intended to boost the growth of the food processing sector in the country, help in providing better prices to farmers, create employment opportunities especially in the rural areas, reduce wastage of agricultural produce, increase the processing level, and enhance the export of the processed foods.
The MoFPI, rather than supporting projects under the public-private partnership model, provides financial assistance to eligible entities for setting up of food processing projects wherein 948 cold storages with the capacity of 18.16 LMT has been established under various component schemes of PMKSY since their inception. PMKSY has several sub-schemes like the Operation Greens Scheme, the Integrated Cold Chain & Value Addition Infrastructure Scheme, and the Creation/Expansion of Food Processing and Preservation Capacities Scheme (CEFPPC). Financial assistance is also provided in the form of grants-in-aid to set up food processing projects which helps to curtail produce wastage and elevate processing percentage in the country.
For mega food parks, Rs158.9 crore was allocated of which Rs140.8 crore was spent. The corresponding figures for integrated cold chain & value addition infrastructure (cold chains) were Rs934.54 crore and Rs745.13 crore, for the creation of infrastructure development for agro processing clusters Rs230.66 crore and Rs180 crore, for CEFPPC Rs956.6 crore and Rs730.47 crore, for the food safety & quality assurance infrastructure Rs140.53 crore and Rs86.54 crore, for Operation Greens Rs342.56 crore and Rs209.15 crore, for the creation of backward-forward linkages Rs127 crore and Rs97.26 crore, and for human resources & institutions Rs62.93 crore and Rs54.14 crore.
