Indian traditional snacks such as jalebi, samosa, and other high-fat, high-sugar, and high-salt (HFSS) foods could soon carry cigarette-style health warnings on their packaging.

In a landmark move to curb lifestyle diseases, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is reportedly considering the implementation of bold health warnings on packaged Indian snacks that are high in calories and low in nutritional value. The aim is to increase consumer awareness about the health risks associated with regular consumption of such items.

The proposed regulation, still under discussion, is inspired by tobacco packaging laws where visible warnings have been mandated to discourage consumption. If enforced, the packaging of popular snacks like samosas, jalebis, and chips may soon bear labels highlighting risks such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

According to government sources, the focus will be on pre-packaged and processed HFSS foods, particularly those targeting children. The FSSAI is reportedly working closely with health experts and policy think tanks like NITI Aayog to create a framework for warning labels that clearly communicate potential health hazards.

Health experts have long warned against the overconsumption of deep-fried, sugary, and salty snacks, especially among younger demographics. With non-communicable diseases on the rise in India, this step could mark a major milestone in public health reform.

While the food industry may resist the move citing economic and cultural concerns, public health advocates are lauding the proposal as a necessary step towards a healthier nation.
