Recognising Andhra Pradesh’s proactive energy policies and investor-friendly environment, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL)—a joint venture of PSUs under the Ministry of Power has proposed a series of advanced, cost-effective energy efficiency initiatives in collaboration with Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL).

During a meeting held at APEPDCL Corporate Office, here, Pruthvitej Immadi, CMD of APEPDCL and Akhilesh Kumar Dixit, the newly appointed CEO of EESL, along with EESL National Advisory for Media A. Chandra Sekhara Reddy and other senior officers, discussed a roadmap to deploy world-class clean energy technologies aimed at enhancing consumer services, promoting sustainable economic growth, and mitigating climate change.

EESL has acknowledged APEPDCL as one of India’s best-performing DISCOMs in implementing energy efficiency programmes.

Under the UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) initiative, Andhra Pradesh has emerged as a frontrunner, saving 2,863 million kWh of electricity annually, resulting in ₹1,145 crore in cost savings and an avoided peak demand of 573 MW.

At the national level, EESL’s interventions have saved 47,882 million kWh, translating to ₹19,153 crore in annual savings and an avoided peak demand of 9,586 MW. Andhra Pradesh’s contribution represents around 6% of India’s total savings, underscoring the state’s leading role in advancing the national energy efficiency mission.

The State also leads in the LED Street Lighting Programme, having installed over 30 lakh LED streetlights (23 lakh in rural and 7 lakh in urban areas), out of 1.36 crore lights installed nationwide. Andhra Pradesh’s early adoption of energy-efficient street lighting —initiated in Visakhapatnam soon after the Hudhud cyclone in 2014—became a model replicated in cities like Varanasi, Jaipur, Surat, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai.

The innovative “Vizag Model” later earned global recognition, including appreciation at a BRICS Conference for its economic, energy, and ecological impact.

In another pioneering step, APEPDCL became India’s first DISCOM to introduce an e-Retail facility for electricity consumers through a partnership with EESL. This digital platform enables consumers to purchase star-rated, energy-efficient appliances directly via the DISCOM’s portal at competitive prices.

The initiative is supported by a multi-channel outreach campaign through SMS, WhatsApp, and online promotions, encouraging consumers to adopt efficient technologies and reduce their electricity bills.

Both EESL and APEPDCL have appealed to consumers to leverage this facility for cost-effective and eco-friendly energy solutions.

In alignment with the Centre’s vision for clean energy and sustainable mobility, EESL has proposed the collaborative interventions for APEPDCL such as National E-Mobility Programme, deployment of electric vehicles for government use to cut carbon emissions and operational costs, Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) and solar rooftop and ground-mounted projects.

EESL also wants to work with APEPDCL for development of small-scale solar plants (0.3–10 MW) near substations to support local grids and strengthen rural power reliability, Smart Meter National Programme (SMNP).
