New Delhi: Coal India Limited (CIL) has secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from Telangana Power Generation Corporation Limited to develop a large battery energy storage system (BESS) at Choutuppal, marking a significant step in its clean energy push.
The 750 MWh project, with a capacity of 187.5 MW for four hours, is estimated to cost Rs 1,057.09 crore. CIL will supply power at a tariff of Rs 3.14 lakh per MW per month. The project is expected to be completed within 18 months from signing the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA).
As part of the process, Coal India will submit performance bank guarantees and other necessary documents within 15 days before the formal agreement is executed. The company confirmed that the contract is with a domestic entity and does not involve any related party transactions.
This initiative reflects Coal India’s ongoing efforts to diversify beyond coal mining and expand into renewable and clean energy solutions as part of its long-term strategy. The move aligns with India’s broader energy transition goals, with the company gradually building its presence in cleaner energy projects.
