Growing concerns about sustainability and environmental awareness are the key factors driving the growth of the refurbished computers & laptops market. Growing concerns regarding electronic waste (e-waste) are prompting people and organizations to reuse and rehabilitate electronic gadgets. This decreases waste for the landfill and reduces carbonation emissions from making new products. Worldwide governments are implementing strict e-waste policies and advancing the circular economy. For instance, the European Union reported in 2022 that it achieved a 39% e-waste recycling rate, indicating that it has made progress in effective electronic waste management.

Companies too are adopting sustainability goals and green purchasing policies which promote their procurement of refurbished IT equipment, helping them reduce their environmental footprint. Consumers are increasingly aware of the benefits of refurbished devices, including lower energy consumption and less dependence on natural resources. It is also more attractive to choose in this sense as these products enjoy reliability ensured by certified refurbishment programs from reputed brands. Consequently, the Rise in sustainability and environmental awareness enriches the growth of the refurbished computers and laptops market.

The global refurbished ICT market is on an upward curve. From USD 9.7 billion in 2018, it has grown to USD 14.4 billion in 2023, and is expected to more than double to USD 38.3 billion by 2028—registering a robust 22% CAGR, according to the 1Lattice Report. Driving this shift are affordability pressures, the rapid obsolescence, and the need for digital inclusion across emerging economies.

India mirrors this trend. With a refurbished PC market estimated at INR 1,700 crore in 2023 and projected to reach INR 7,000 crore by 2028 (32% CAGR), the country stands at an inflexion point. Several structural forces are converging. The government’s Digital India push, especially in education and rural digitization, is expanding device demand beyond metros. At the same time, small businesses, startups, and gig workers are seeking value-oriented tech, boosting the adoption of pre-owned systems.

Large corporates are also turning to certified refurbishers to dispose of outdated IT assets, in compliance with tightening e-waste norms. On the consumer side, trust is growing. Platforms now offer warranty-backed refurbished devices, return policies, and EMI options, reducing the perceived risk of secondhand tech.

With India’s PC penetration still among the lowest globally (~15 per 100 people), the growth headroom is massive. As refurbished technology transitions from a fallback option to a conscious choice, organised players stand to benefit.

GNG Electronics, with its multi-country sourcing, in-house refurbishing, Microsoft MAR authorisation, and pan-India retail network, is strategically positioned to lead this evolution. The tailwinds aren’t just favourable—they’re accelerating.

Refurbished computers and laptops are in high demand today, especially among students. These devices are being chosen by schools in developing countries as they are less expensive. Authorities and NGOs are funding programs that offer refurbished devices to schools and low-income households. More than 50% of schools in low-income countries do not have access to digital tools, according to UNESCO, and government initiatives seek to fill the gap. Refurbished devices have also been a mainstay of education technology very much because digital literacy and online learning needs increased through the COVID-19 pandemic. The other trend is the emergence of an online marketplace for refurbished electronic products.

Secondly, the growing popularity of e-commerce websites that sell refurbished devices means that more people can easily buy second-hand or old appliances online as compared to visiting a store. According to a World Economic Forum report, digital sales channels in emerging countries have skyrocketed by twenty percent year on year, a trend that has only accelerated the growth of the overall refurbished electronics market.

The most significant segments contributing to the growth of the refurbished computers & laptops market are individual consumers, as they find refurbished computers and laptops economical, environmentally friendly, and of higher quality. They can be found at a fraction of the price of new devices, which makes them popular with cost-conscious consumers, students, and freelancers.
