Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs under the Ministry of Power is poised to catapult India into a new era of energy efficient (EE) illumination, committing to install an additional 1.6 crore LED streetlights by 2024 under the Street Lighting National programme (SLNP).

The initiative, already benefiting the public and governments nationwide with over 1.32 crore installed LED streetlights, has delivered a substantial impact yielding an estimated annual energy savings of 8.92 billion kWh, and peak demand avoidance of 1,488 MW.

The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is equally striking at 6.15 million tons of CO2 per year. Beyond energy efficiency, SLNP enhances civic aesthetics and significantly bolsters public safety. According to an EESL release, through the UJALA scheme which has been launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, EESL continues to leave an indelible mark on India’s energy landscape.

With the distribution of over 36.86 crore LED bulbs, 72.18 lakh LED tubelights and 23.59 lakh energy-efficient fans, UJALA achieves estimated energy savings of 48.39 billion kWh per year. This initiative not only reduces carbon emissions by 39.30 million tons of CO2 annually but also results in savings of Rs 19,332 crore in consumers’ annual electricity bills.
