Visakhapatnam : Continuing its winning streak, East Coast Railway (ECoR) has become the first zone of Indian Railways to achieve the loading figure of 150 million tonne during 2020-21.

ECoR headquartered at Bhubaneswar had handled a freight totalling 200.12 mt and earning a revenue of nearly Rs.20,000 crore last financial year and emerged as the number one zone in the country.

This year it is registering a growth by 11 per cent in volume of freight compared to corresponding period last year.

A spokesperson for ECOR told Bizz Buzz that they had carried 150.86 mt of freight traffic up to January 10, 2021 of the current fiscal and became the first Zonal Railway to reach 150 mt freight loading in the current fiscal.

The total cargo handled so far included 84.10 mt coal, 20.50 mt of Iron ore, 13.03 mt of Iron and steel, 5.67mt of raw materials for steel plants, 5.30 mt of fertilizer, 2.29 mt of container, 2.05 mt of foodgrains, 2.03 mt of petroleum products and 15.88 mt of other commodities. The zone handled container traffic of 2.29 million tonne.

During the first 10 days of New Year, ECoR carried 6.58 mt of freight registering a growth of 15.6 per cent from the corresponding period of last year.

The zone carried 20.53 mt of freight in December, 2020 of the current financial year by increasing 11.8 per cent more than the corresponding period of 2019. In December, 2019, ECoR loaded 18.36 mt of freight.

Up to the end of December, 2020 of the current fiscal, the zone carried 144.25 mt of freight. This included 80.50 mt of coal, 19.5 mt of iron ore, 12.44 mt of iron and steel, 5.25 mt of raw materials for steel plants, 5.16 mt of fertilizer, 2.21 mt of container, 1.93 mt of food grains, 1.95 mt of petroleum products and 14.77 mt of other commodities.

The spokesman stated that to achieve this loading figure, ECoR utilised 9,945 wagons per day in December, 2020 as against 8,864 wagons during the correspondence period of last financial year. Similarly, up to the end of December, 2020, ECoR utilised about 7,899 wagons per day from April 1, 2020 and aims to load more rakes to achieve the goal.

This has been achieved despite lockdown and closure and less workforce in industries and in mineral units under East Coast Railway jurisdiction. To get this remarkable performance, East Coast Railway has utilized its manpower and rolling stock items with proper planning and coordination with Govt Sectors and Industries.

Under the leadership and guidance of its General Manager Shri Vidya Bhushan, East Coast Railway has achieved the remarkable performance. Apart from this, the business development units of East Coast Railway integrating innovative policy making with stability and certainty in the logistics sectors by attracting new avenues for modal transit from rail to road.
