New Delhi: HDFC Bank has opened a branch at Kavaratti Island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, becoming the only private sector bank with a presence in the region.

The branch was inaugurated by Captain Lovekesh Thakur, Commanding Officer, Indian Navy, and Dr. K P Muthukoya, a prominent resident of the island. Mr. S Sampathkumar, Group Head- Retail Branch Banking, HDFC Bank, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar, Branch Banking Head for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry, along with other local dignitaries, graced the occasion.

This new branch aims to enhance the banking infrastructure in the Union Territory by offering a wide range of services, with a focus on personal banking and digital banking solutions. These include customized digital options like QR-based transactions for retailers.

Mr S Sampathkumar, Group Head- Retail Branch Banking, HDFC Bank, commented on the branch opening, stating, “HDFC Bank now has branches from the cold climes of Kashmir to the southern tip of Kanyakumari, and now the island of Lakshadweep. This demonstrates our commitment to providing convenient service to customers wherever they are. We are eager to cater to the financial needs of individuals, families, and businesses in Lakshadweep, aiming to become a trusted partner in their financial journey and contribute to the island's overall development.”

As of December 31, 2023, HDFC Bank's distribution network included 8,091 branches and 20,688 ATMs across 3,872 cities/towns, compared to 7,183 branches and 19,007 ATMs in 3,552 cities/towns as of December 31, 2022. Approximately 52% of the bank's branches are located in semi-urban and rural areas. Additionally, the bank has 15,053 business correspondents, primarily operated by Common Service Centres (CSC).
