The festive season of Diwali in India is still going on, and people are asking if banks will be open on October 21 during the Govardhan Puja celebrations. The confusion arises from different states observing Diwali (the festival of lights) on October 20 and 21.

As per the holiday calendar of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks in a number of cities will be closed for Govardhan Puja today (Tuesday) under the Negotiable Instruments Act. At the same time, some areas had their Diwali (Laxmi Pujan) holiday on October 20 (Monday).

Banks Closed Today (October 21) in the Following Cities:

  • Belapur
  • Bhopal (both days)
  • Gangtok (both days)
  • Guwahati (both days)
  • Imphal
  • Jammu
  • Mumbai
  • Nagpur
  • Raipur
  • Srinagar

Even though the physical branches will be closed in these cities, online banking will still be available, along with digital payment services like UPI, IMPS, NEFT and net banking. Users can carry on with their transactions at ATMs and through mobile banking without any hassle.

The RBI keeps October 22 as a holiday in certain states for Diwali (Bali Pratipada), Vikram Samvat New Year, Govardhan Puja and Balipadyami Laxmi Puja.

Plan Transactions Early

People who are going to banks for any cash-related transactions or services requiring their presence are asked to schedule their visits earlier in order not to be inconvenienced during the festive week.

About Diwali and Govardhan Puja

The Diwali festival, which is derived from the Sanskrit term Deepavali meaning “a row of lights,” is celebrated as the triumph of light over darkness, and good over evil. All people around the country rendered lamps, shared gifts and performed prayers on Monday. Govardhan Puja, the day after, commemorates Krishna's safeguarding the Gokul population from heavy rains.
