Tesla Opens First Showroom in India at Mumbai’s BKC: Check Model Y Price, Features, Top Speed & Launch Timeline

Mumbai, July 15, 2025 — Tesla has officially entered the Indian automobile market, inaugurating its first showroom in Mumbai at the Maker Maxity Mall, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). This marks a significant milestone for the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) giant as it takes on global competitors like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and domestic players like Tata Motors and Mahindra in the world’s third-largest car market.
The showroom launch witnessed VIP visits and police presence, reflecting the high-profile nature of Tesla's Indian debut.
Tesla Model Y Launch in India: Variants and Features
Tesla’s debut in India will be centered around a single model – the Model Y, which will be available in two variants:
Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive
Range: Up to 500 km
Acceleration: 0–100 km/h in 5.9 seconds
Features: 15.4-inch touchscreen, 9-speaker audio system, advanced noise reduction suspension
Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive
Range: Up to 622 km
Acceleration: 0–100 km/h in 5.6 seconds
Features: Same tech and design upgrades as above
Tesla Model Y India Price
Rear-Wheel Drive Variant: ₹60.1 lakh (approx. $70,000)
Long Range Variant: ₹67.8 lakh (approx. $79,000)
These prices are considerably higher than global rates due to India's high import duties on fully built EVs. The steep tariffs were a key factor behind Tesla’s delayed entry into the Indian market.
Next Steps: Delhi Showroom & Delivery Timeline
According to Bloomberg, Tesla has already shipped six units of Model Y to Mumbai from its Shanghai Gigafactory. A second showroom is expected to open in New Delhi by the end of July 2025.
Tesla has also expanded local hiring and leased warehouse space to facilitate operations. Deliveries of Model Y are expected to start next month.
Tesla’s Announcement and Market Strategy
Tesla’s India-focused X (formerly Twitter) account had teased the launch on Friday with a “Coming soon” message and a graphic hinting at its July entry. The move signals Tesla's long-awaited push into the South Asian EV space amid growing demand for premium electric vehicles.
