Tesla’s India Entry Gains Momentum

Tesla’s move comes shortly after CEO Elon Musk met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the United States. The company had previously been hesitant about entering the Indian market due to high import duties. However, a recent reduction in customs duties—from 110% to 70% for luxury vehicles priced above $40,000 (approximately ₹35 lakh)—may have encouraged Tesla’s expansion plans.

India’s electric vehicle market is still in its early stages, with nearly 1 lakh electric cars sold last year—significantly lower than China’s 11 million. To remain competitive, Tesla is also expected to introduce a low-cost electric vehicle specifically for the Indian market. While the Model 3, Tesla’s most affordable car in the U.S., is priced at around $30,000 (over ₹26 lakh), the company is expected to launch an even more affordable model tailored to India’s price-sensitive market.
