"Dear Elon Bhai, What's With the Tax-La?" Indians React with Memes to Tesla's High Prices
Tesla has finally launched in India with the Model Y, but its hefty price tag, largely due to steep import duties, has sparked a wave of humor and criticism on Indian social media. Find out why the "Made in India" dream for Tesla remains distant.
"Dear Elon Bhai, What's With the Tax-La?" Indians React with Memes to Tesla's High Prices

The long-anticipated arrival of Tesla in India has finally materialized, with the electric vehicle giant opening its first showroom in Mumbai's upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The showroom, featuring the Model Y variants, was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who expressed hopes for future research, development, and manufacturing in India. However, the excitement quickly morphed into a mix of humor and outrage as the prices for the Model Y variants were revealed on Tesla's Indian website: ₹59.89 lakh and ₹67.89 lakh.
The Sticker Shock Heard 'Round India
The steep pricing immediately ignited a firestorm on social media, with many Indians taking to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to express their disbelief and frustration. The core of the anger stems from the significant portion of the price that goes towards taxes.
"If you buy a #Tesla Model Y in India, you will pay around ₹33 lakh to the company and ₹28 lakh to the Government as taxes. If this is not tax extortion, I do not know what it is," lamented one user, highlighting the stark breakdown.
Another witty comment captured the sentiment perfectly: "Almost half of it is Tax. Instead of Tesla, it should be called ‘TAX-LA’ in India." The sentiment was echoed by a third user who pointed out, "#TeslaModelY price is doubled because of import duty and/or other taxes. Road tax insurance, GST, etc., will be added. Unless and until #Tesla starts manufacturing or at least assembling in #India, it won't be successful."
The frustration even extended to broader questions about India's tax structure: "That's a hefty tax burden! Does any country tax its citizens like this?"
Why the Exorbitant Prices?
The reason behind the significantly marked-up prices is clear: India's high import duties on completely built-up (CBU) vehicles. According to a CNBC report, Tesla's Chief Financial Officer, Vaibhav Taneja, confirmed that the price components in India include a "70% tariff on EV imports and about 30% luxury tax." This means that a substantial portion of the vehicle's cost for Indian consumers goes directly to government levies.
For comparison, the same Model Y can start at around $44,990 (approx. ₹37.8 lakh) in the United States, 263,500 yuan (approx. ₹31.2 lakh) in China, and €45,970 (approx. ₹46.1 lakh) in Germany, making India one of the most expensive markets globally for the Model Y.
Experts suggest that due to this pricing, Tesla will not be competing with local EV manufacturers like Tata Motors or Mahindra & Mahindra. Instead, its direct rivals in the Indian market will be premium car segments, such as those offered by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi.
While Tesla's physical presence marks a significant step, the immediate social media reaction underscores the challenge the company faces in India. For Tesla to truly achieve widespread success and sales volume in the country, many believe a strategy involving local manufacturing or assembly to bypass the prohibitive import duties will be essential. Until then, Indians will likely continue to express their "love-hate" relationship with the brand through a steady stream of humor and, perhaps, a longing for a more affordable "Made in India" Tesla.
