Tesla officially marked its entry into India with the launch of its first showroom in Mumbai, drawing praise from Indian business leaders — including Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Mahindra welcomed Tesla’s move, calling it a positive development for India’s rapidly evolving electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem. “Welcome to India, Elon Musk,” Mahindra wrote, adding that the competition would boost innovation and accelerate EV adoption across the country.
Tesla’s Mumbai showroom is located in Lower Parel, one of the city's prime commercial zones. The opening follows months of negotiations between Tesla and the Indian government regarding import duties, local sourcing norms, and EV policy incentives.
Mahindra, whose company has been investing heavily in EVs through Mahindra Electric and the XUV400 EV, emphasized that healthy competition in the electric mobility space will benefit the entire industry — and ultimately, Indian consumers.
Tesla’s entry is expected to challenge established Indian automakers and push the market toward better infrastructure, policy alignment, and affordability.
