The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will observe Diwali Balipratipada by closing down on Wednesday, October 22. Regular trading will recommence on the following day, October 23, Thursday.

The market was closed on Tuesday for the Diwali festival, and only Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 5 and Christmas on December 25 remain public holidays for the year 2025.

The anniversary of Samvat 2082 was celebrated with the first Muhurat trading on Tuesday. The one-hour special session, from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., saw the blue-chip stocks initially gaining, but the booking of profits reduced some of the earlier increase. The Sensex started with a gain of more than 270 points, while the Nifty momentarily surpassed 25,900, backed by robust buying in stocks like Infosys, HDFC Bank, and Mahindra & Mahindra. Both the indices finished the day with slight gains indicating investor sentiment that was mixed.

During the Muhurat session, traders participated in symbolic transactions and celebrated the start of the financial year with modest volumes and broad sector participation in the stock market, including the financial, automotive, and energy sectors.

Diwali Balipratipada, which is also known as Govardhan Puja or Padwa, is the day following Diwali. The festival brings to mind King Bali who was a type of ruler who earned people's love by being generous and devoted. There is a story that goes that Lord Vishnu in his Vamana avatar granted Bali the boon of visiting his people once a year. The day is a symbol of resurrection, abundance and the victory of modesty over arrogance.

For the investors, Balipratipada is generally considered an auspicious day to start financial ventures and investments which are coincidentally the beginning of a new fiscal cycle.
