Small Consulting Firm Turned a $200/mo Smartr App Into a 30-Person, $20k a Month Sales Machine

When I first heard about Smartr Marketing, I was skeptical. I was listening to a Podcast with Jason Criddle who was talking about affiliate marketing and how their apps worked and it just made too much sense to seem real.
The idea that a consulting business could buy a $200/month app and suddenly have dozens of sales partners referring new clients sounded too good to be true. Then I sat down with “BrightEdge Consulting…” a Smartr customer.
Bright Edge is a boutique consulting firm with a small team, limited budget, super high ambition, and a Smartr App.
They had grown in the beginning by referrals and direct outreach, but they knew that if they really wanted to scale, they needed to leverage technology. Enter the Smartr App.
What is Smartr Marketing / Smartr Apps?
Before we get into the case, here’s a quick overview of how Smartr Marketing works:
Smartr Marketing allows businesses to get their own white-labeled app or website that can be customized to match their brand. They are getting their own version of the exact app and/or website available at thesmartrmarketingapp.com
When someone signs up for Smartr or any Smartr app, they receive their own referral code to share. That referral code lets new users sign up under them and begin earning. They just suggest editing your code in the app to be something custom to yourself instead of using the original random number generated.
Earnings, transaction tracking, and referral payouts are managed through the app’s dashboard / wallet system. In Smartr’s own words: “all earnings are itemized and tracked in real time.” You as a user just share your code with new customers or referral partners who download the same app and do the same thing.
Smartr claims that with zero cost to promote beyond sharing your referral code, anyone can build an affiliate or referral income stream. A company pays for an app, but promoting that brand is free and open to everyone.
Because Smartr integrates the software and affiliate infrastructure in one, businesses don’t need to stitch together separate solutions for payments, referral tracking, and dashboards. They don't even have to acquire tax paperwork from referral partners they may never meet. Smartr takes care of all of it.
In short: Smartr is selling not just software, but a network effect + affiliate marketing engine built into your brand’s Smartr app.
The Interview: BrightEdge’s Experiment with a $200 Smartr App
Here are the essentials of how BrightEdge used their initial Smartr setup to create exponential growth:
Bright Edge opted for Smartr’s “Gold” package (their $200/month tier, as they told me). With no in-house dev resources, they liked that Smartr handled the app/website setup, dashboard, payment integration, and referral backend.
Within days of going live, they invited three close friends, some fellow consultants, and past clients to download the app, get their own referral codes, and share those with their networks. This small bootstrap move seeded their first “micro-sales team.”
Some of those referrals resulted in direct business. More interestingly, many of the new users (who became affiliates) began referring others themselves. Because their referral codes were already embedded in the system, each new person was tracked, commissions were computed, and payout flows were automatic.
And payouts are multigenerational. So you can earn when your referral partners share, up to 3 levels.
Before long, Bright Edge found itself managing a network of 30+ affiliate partners and clients who were actively driving leads, conversions, and new client deals.
All transactions, invoicing clients, taking payments, allocating affiliate commission splits… it all ran through the Smartr app ecosystem. No spreadsheets. No manual payouts. No chasing down who referred who. It's all plug-and-play.
Revenue vs. investment
Let’s do the rough math:
Monthly cost: $200 + 3% and .50 cents per transaction.
Number of active affiliate partners / referrers: 30+
Average client or purchase they send in: small to medium consulting engagements. Clients pay $500 to $1,500 per month.
Commission margins and fees internal to their model: built into their pricing. They share 10% on first generation sales, and 5% on second/5% on third generation sales.
They reported that their $200 “investment” soon translated into $20,000+ per month in revenue (gross intake). With all of it managed and tracked seamlessly. Their ROI was staggering, especially considering they had no manual tracking overhead.
Because Smartr handled transaction routing and payout logic, Bright Edge’s team could focus purely on serving clients and onboarding new referrers, not on accounting or affiliate logistics.
Why This Model Works (and Outperforms Traditional Approaches)
Several factors made this success possible and replicable:
1. Built-in viral loop
Because each user automatically gets a referral code, Smartr and customer products come with a built-in incentive to share. This is the core virality mechanic most startups chase.
2. Low friction
There’s minimal effort required from users to refer. The share code flow exists within the app. They don’t need to integrate third-party affiliate tools, build referral pages, or manually track payouts. Just download and register with one button.
3. Scalable affiliate architecture
As the network grows, Smartr’s backend handles the logic, all tiered referrals, commissions, and payout splits; all without requiring manual maintenance.
4. Aligned incentives
The affiliates are also customers, which motivates them to promote the app and the primary business (Bright Edge or) Smartr Marketing. The more clients come in, the more they benefit.
5. Full control over payments & commissions
Because all transactions flow through the Smartr system, the business retains visibility, control over margins, and can prevent leakage or fraud.
6. Simplicity for growth
Without needing to assemble multiple tools (payment gateway + affiliate engine + dashboard), the barrier to scaling is much lower. They just pay the monthly app fee to participate.
A Few Hypothetical Scenarios
Suppose an affiliate referred 3 clients paying $500… each as a one-time project. At a 10% affiliate commission, they’d earn $150 on those deals. If 10 affiliates generated similar deals, that’s $1,500 in affiliate payouts, but the platform also sees thousands in revenue. A win for both the business and the network.
Over time, the referral tree deepens. Affiliates refer sub-affiliates. Smartr tracks multi-tier relationships automatically, so the business can reward second and third-level referrers without manual setup.
Clients can pay, plus taxes and fees, all inside the app. All partner earnings and commission calculations happen inside the same system, keeping accounting clean and auditable.
What This Means for Small Businesses and Brands
If you’re a small consulting firm, service provider, or startup with limited capital and a desire for scalable growth, here’s what you should know:
You don’t need a huge budget to start. You need a system that can replicate itself.
An app and referral engine bundled together gives you leverage to gain new sales partners.
The path to growth is to get your first 3 to 5 trusted partners to adopt and promote. Let the compounding effect do the heavy lifting.
Choose vendors that manage the infrastructure (transactions, tracking, payouts) so you focus on value delivery.
Call to Action
If you’re intrigued by how BrightEdge (our case study) achieved 30+ referral partners and turned a $200/month app into tens of thousands in revenue, here's what you can do:
1. Visit thesmartrmarketingapp.com
Read their “How it Works” section and see their compensation structure.
2. Download the Smartr Marketing app (available on Google Play and The App Store). You’ll see referral code tools, wallet, dashboard, and education built in.
3. Buy a Smartr app for your brand. Just choose a package, get your dashboard, and launch your own branded app with referral capability.
4. Promote Smartr apps to other businesses using your own referral code. You don’t just use the system, you can sell it to others and earn recurring income too.
If BrightEdge could turn a small app fee into a 30-person referral network and generate significant monthly revenue, then the question is: What could you do?
Smartr Marketing is a referral-powered business engine baked into the structure of your brand. And for entrepreneurs looking to scale smarter (not harder), it’s one of the cleaner, more leverage-filled strategies I’ve seen in recent years.
Go explore, test it, and see how far your network can take you.
