Relief may soon be on the way for over 1 crore central government employees and pensioners, as the government confirmed it has received inputs from key stakeholders regarding the much-awaited 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC).
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the official notification will be issued “in due course” after thorough review.
📊 Progress and Timeline
The Finance Ministry has been consulting with states, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Department of Personnel and Training to expedite the process. The chairperson and commission members will be appointed once the notification is released.
Chaudhary assured that the commission will make its recommendations within the stipulated timeline outlined in its Terms of Reference (ToR).
🕒 Concerns Over Delay
The 8th Pay Commission, first announced in January 2025, has faced delays, raising concerns among employees struggling with rising inflation. Traditionally, pay commissions are constituted every 10 years to revise the salaries of government employees and pensions of retirees, accounting for the rising cost of living.
The 7th Pay Commission, implemented in 2016, last revised salaries effective January 1, 2016. By the standard cycle, the 8th CPC was expected to be in place by 2024–25. However, with over six months passed since the announcement, employees and pensioners are still waiting for clarity.
📌 What’s Next
♦ Notification: Expected soon after final review.
♦ Appointments: Chairperson and members to be named post-notification.
♦ Effective Date: Pay and pension revisions likely within six months of notification.
♦ Scope: Will impact over 1 crore employees and pensioners.
With growing pressure from staff unions and inflation continuing to rise, the government is under watch to ensure the 8th Pay Commission delivers timely relief.
