The highly anticipated third season of Netflix's global phenomenon, Squid Game, premiered on June 27, delivering a chaotic and unexpected conclusion that has left fans reeling and speculating about the franchise's future. While Lee Jung Jae's Seong Gi Hun met a tragic end, the ultimate winner of the ₩4.56 billion prize was a never-before-seen participant: the baby of Im Siwan's Lee Myung Gi and Jo Yu Ri's Kim Jun Hee.
The Season 3 finale also featured a surprise cameo from Hollywood star Cate Blanchett, who appears to be taking over Gong Yoo's "The Salesman" role, further fueling discussions about a potential Korean "Squid Game 4." However, as of now, no official plans for a direct fourth season have been announced.
"Squid Game: America" on the Horizon
Earlier reports confirmed that acclaimed director David Fincher (Fight Club, Gone Girl) is set to helm an English-language adaptation titled "Squid Game: America." While a release date is yet to be set, filming for the US version is reportedly scheduled to begin this December.
It remains unclear whether Squid Game: America will be a direct continuation of the Korean original's storyline or a complete remake. Cate Blanchett's cameo, where she is seen playing the traditional Korean game of Ddakji in Los Angeles, suggests that both possibilities are equally plausible for the American iteration.
Creator Teases Potential Spin-off
Squid Game creator, director Hwang Dong Hyuk, has previously discussed the possibility of a spin-off based on his story. At the 2025 Gotham Television Awards, Hwang revealed, "If I make a spin-off, it will be a story happening between seasons 1 and 2. There was a three years gap between seasons 1 and 2, so I want to show what they did for those times."
This suggests that while a direct continuation of the Korean series with the original characters seems unlikely, fans might get to delve deeper into the Squid Game universe through a spin-off exploring the mysterious period between the first two seasons. The fate of Seong Gi Hun after his Season 1 win and the activities of the game's recruiters and masked staff outside the arena could be explored in such a venture.
