Chennai: Ever since the heartfelt romantic drama 96 won hearts across India, fans have wondered: will Ram and Jaanu’s story continue? And if so, can anyone really replace Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha?

Recently, the rumor mill kicked into high gear with whispers that rising Tamil star Pradeep Ranganathan might take over the role of Ram in a possible sequel. Social media was abuzz, with fans divided over whether a fresh face could do justice to the emotional depth that defined the original film.

But now, director Prem Kumar has stepped forward to address the speculation—and his response is equal parts thoughtful and intriguing.

“If there’s a sequel, it has to feel necessary,” Prem told Bizz Buzz in an exclusive chat. “96 was never made with a franchise in mind. It was a complete story in itself. Any continuation must feel organic—not forced, not commercial.”

On the question of replacing Vijay Sethupathi, Prem was candid: “Vijay and Trisha brought life to Ram and Jaanu. I can’t imagine anyone else filling those shoes without a very strong reason—story-wise and emotionally.”

The Pradeep Factor

So where does Pradeep Ranganathan fit into the picture? While the Love Today actor has not confirmed anything, his name being floated signals the industry's growing interest in leveraging his youthful charm and relatability for intense roles.

“He’s a fantastic actor,” Prem acknowledged. “But the question isn’t about casting first. It’s about whether there’s a story that deserves to be told.”

Sequel or Spin-off?

While nothing is confirmed, sources close to the production world suggest that a follow-up to 96—if it ever happens—might be more of a spiritual sequel or a companion story rather than a direct continuation.

Fans of 96 remain deeply attached to the film’s lingering, nostalgic tone. “We don’t need a sequel unless it hits the heart the way the first one did,” said Aarthi M., a Chennai-based fan who’s watched the film over ten times.

Final Word? Not Yet.

Prem Kumar has neither greenlit a sequel nor ruled it out completely. For now, he remains focused on future projects—but hasn’t closed the door on revisiting Ram and Jaanu’s world.

“Some stories live on in the hearts of the audience. Maybe that’s where 96 is meant to stay. Or maybe, just maybe, there’s more left to say.”
