Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio has expressed that he does not plan to go the route of directing, considering his admiration for Martin Scorsese and confessing that he is not able to match the legendary director's cinematic skill, as per People’s report.
The 51-year-old actor made the comment during a discussion with Scorsese at the A Year in TIME event held in New York City. The main topic of the dialogue was their enduring professional partnership and the collaborative film-making technique they employ.
DiCaprio said, “People inquire me and always answer in negative if I would direct, to say absolutely no. It would be impossible for me to do what Martin does. Then why try?”
DiCaprio while dismissing directing as an option went ahead to talk about his acting career and even confessed that he regretted not being able to sit in the director’s chair closer in some of his past projects and watch the making of the film.
“You are an actor who plays roles and gets into their psyche. I should have been there all the time watching Martin working behind the camera,” says DiCaprio in the People’s report. “I would have loved it if my own awakening in filmmaking had been at such an angle.”
The actor has worked with Scorsese in six films and he emphasized the detailed and careful preparation that the two of them go through in the process of their collaboration.
“Dollars have been our method the whole—in a way, it has been our method—lobbing ideas back and forth for months during which questioning, exploring, and even cutting up those with the wilfully less obvious directions have been” he said. “The new film is no different—we are still going through the same process and it has been very valuable to me as a learning experience.”
DiCaprio was also quick to point out that he has had a hard time thinking of anybody outside of his relationship with Scorsese, as the latter has always been one of the most influential mentors to the actor ever since he was there at the birth of the director’s career.
“My dad took me to see Marty’s films along with ones starring Robert De Niro. He told me no matter what, I would definitely be the one working with Martin! So seeing his work at such a young age pretty much shaped my dreams,” he mentioned.
In 2002, DiCaprio and Scorsese came together for the first time in the film Gangs of New York. After that, they teamed up for several more box office hits such as The Aviator, The Departed, and Killers of the Flower Moon, which all received Oscar nominations.
Their next film, What Happens at Night, which is also DiCaprio and Lawrence's first joint project, will be based on Peter Cameron's novel and will mark the pair of filmmakers' second partnership. People magazine reports that filming is now taking place.
