Actor-producer Vishnu Manchu is preparing for the global release of Kannappa, a high-budget mythological fantasy drama featuring top stars Prabhas and Mohanlal. The film, directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh and backed by M. Mohan Babu, is scheduled to release in theatres worldwide on June 27, 2025.
The film’s production budget is reported to have crossed Rs 200 crore. However, Vishnu disclosed that two of the industry’s biggest stars—Prabhas and Mohanlal—refused to accept any remuneration for their roles in the movie.
In an interview with Screen, Vishnu recounted the actors' reactions when he attempted to discuss their fees. “Each time I tried bringing up payment, they shut me down. Mohanlal asked how I could even think of offering him money after growing up around him. Prabhas joked that he would kill me if I brought it up again,” Vishnu shared.
The actor further explained the significance of their support. “Two individuals played a key part in bringing this film together—Mohanlal and Prabhas. Mohanlal agreed instantly out of respect for my father. He didn’t even hesitate or ask about his role,” Vishnu stated.
Regarding Prabhas, Vishnu called him a long-time friend and said the pan-Asian star agreed to participate without reviewing his character. “I told him that his presence would boost the film’s reach. He said yes immediately and didn’t ask about the role or the scale of it,” he revealed.
Vishnu also mentioned that Akshay Kumar, who is part of the cast, charged significantly below his usual market rate.
Set in a mythological context, Kannappa narrates the story of a hunter who transitions from atheism to becoming a devout follower of Lord Shiva. The tale revolves around the legendary act where Kannappa sacrifices his eyes as a mark of devotion.
Despite facing challenges—including a recent setback where a hard drive containing vital footage reportedly went missing—the film is on track for its June release.
