Vetri Maaran Approaches HC After CBFC Denies Film Certification

Renowned Tamil filmmaker Vetri Maaran has filed a petition with the Madras High Court challenging the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for denying certification to his latest production, Manushi. The film, directed by Gopi Nainar and starring Andrea Jeremiah, centers on the custodial torture of a woman wrongly accused of terrorism.
According to the petition, the CBFC refused to certify the film, citing reasons such as the portrayal of the state in a negative light, content considered to be against national interest, and themes that could potentially stir regional or communal tensions. The board also alleged that the film may undermine state authority, stereotype certain communities, and defame government policies.
Vetri Maaran argued that the decision was made without allowing him a fair opportunity to defend or clarify the film’s content. He also stated that a previous request to reconstitute the examining committee suggesting inclusion of human rights activists was ignored.
Responding to the petition, the High Court expressed concern over the CBFC's failure to clearly identify which specific scenes, dialogues, or visuals were considered objectionable. The judge directed the board to either provide a detailed list of the problematic content or review the film alongside the producers and highlight the concerns by June 16.
Manushi features a soundtrack by legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja and includes performances by veteran actor Nassar. The film’s trailer, released earlier this year, attracted attention for its socially driven narrative and hard-hitting themes.
This legal action has once again sparked a wider conversation about creative freedom, censorship, and the evolving role of regulatory bodies in Indian cinema.
