Varanasi: SS Rajamouli ‘Angry and Heartbroken’ After Mahesh Babu Starrer’s Visuals Leak Online

The upcoming Mahesh Babu–Priyanka Chopra Jonas–Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer has officially been titled Varanasi (formerly SSMB29). However, the grand reveal was overshadowed by an unexpected leak that left director SS Rajamouli furious and deeply disappointed.

Rajamouli reacts sharply to leaked visuals

Hours before the Globetrotter event in Hyderabad, a crucial video glimpse from Varanasi surfaced online. Speaking at the event, Rajamouli expressed frustration over the breach.

He revealed that despite heavy security and strict precautions, someone used a drone to record the test visuals during the technical setup.

“We sourced the best LEDs and set up a massive screen, arranged dozens of generators… yet it was all in vain,” the filmmaker said, calling the leak a heartbreaking setback.

The leaked footage exposed the film’s title and Mahesh Babu’s never-seen-before look, spoiling the makers’ carefully planned reveal.

What we know about Varanasi

Varanasi is positioned as a global adventure drama, with Mahesh Babu playing Rudhra, an explorer and time traveler. Early reports suggest his character draws inspiration from African folklore and classic adventure icons like Indiana Jones.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas plays Mandakini, described as a femme fatale, while Prithviraj Sukumaran will be seen as the antagonist Kumbha.

Prithviraj, speaking at the event, said he was awestruck by the film’s scale:

“Just five minutes into the narration, I was blown away… Rajamouli’s ambition is on another level.”

Release timeline

Though no official announcement has been made yet, industry buzz suggests that Varanasi is targeting a March 25, 2027 theatrical release.
