Washington DC [US], December 19 (ANI): The collaboration between Hollywood star Tom Cruise and Oscar-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu on the new film Digger is set, which will go to theaters worldwide on October 2, 2026.

The first look at the film, which is being made in association with Legendary Entertainment, has been revealed by Warner Bros. along with a poster and a teaser. The teaser introduces Digger as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” and this immediately fascinates the audience. In the short clip, Tom Cruise is shown doing a dance with a shovel on the very top of a high-rise building, which indicates the surreal nature of the film.

Digger is a big project for Iñárritu as this will be his first English-language movie since The Revenant, and the shooting lasted six months in the UK. The director has both produced and helmed the project, working from a script he co-wrote in 2023 with Birdman collaborators Nicolas Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris, along with Sabina Berman. The film is jointly produced by Iñárritu and Cruise.

Sharing the teaser on Instagram, Cruise wrote, “In Digger we trust. DIGGER. A comedy of catastrophic proportions. Only in theatres October 2026.”

Tom Cruise takes on the role of Digger Rockwell, a character, according to Warner Bros., “the most powerful man in the world,” who tries to assert he is the messiah of mankind before the heavenly created disaster wipes out everything, all in a race against time. Although specific plot points have not been revealed yet, the concept hints at a daring and innovative story line that goes across genres.

The movie does not only have a main actor but also has a powerful cast that consist of other great actors like, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, and Emma D’Arcy.

Digger is Cruise’s first project since signing a deal earlier this year to develop and produce theatrical films with Warner Bros. Discovery. The director's last collaboration with the studio was ten years ago on Edge of Tomorrow.

October 2026 as the release date suggests a strong chance for a Venice Film Festival premiere, one of the events Iñárritu is often associated with, since he has already won the Golden Lion there with such films as Birdman, 21 Grams, and Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths. Moreover, he received an Academy Award for special achievement in 2018 for his virtual-reality project Carne y Arena.

Tom Cruise's last performances were in the upcoming film Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.
