Last Rites, the most recent film in the well-known horror series, has an exciting conclusion while adhering to the series' defining theme of good triumphing over evil. Inspired by the real-life Smurl case, the film, which stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in their last roles as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, examines a haunting connected to a cursed mirror and a Pennsylvania family.

The Warrens must protect the family from evil forces while dealing with both supernatural and personal difficulties—Ed battles a failing heart and their daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson) gets possessed.

Conclusion Described

In the film's happy ending, Judy marries her beloved Tony (Ben Hardy), and Lorraine looks forward to a prosperous future for her family. "We want to have something positive to say," co-writer and producer James Wan clarified. We want our films to be about good things winning over bad things because the world is such a dark place. Wan compared the conclusion to his work on Fast & Furious 7, which combined emotional resonance with homage.

Judy's wedding scene is significant, according to Farmiga, who emphasised that it demonstrates her development into adulthood and her mastery of her own spiritual gifts—things Lorraine has always worked to preserve.

Franchise tributes and cameos

The franchise is also honoured in the finale. The wedding scene features appearances from Lili Taylor, Mackenzie Foy, and Frances O'Connor from Conjuring 2, as well as Wan, who reluctantly joins the scene at the director's request.

The Franchise's Future

There are currently no confirmed new Conjuring projects. "Never say never, I suppose," Wan said, "but I'm saying no." While allowing for possible spin-offs, like prequels or stories centred on Judy and Tony, the series honours the Warrens' legacy. Future adventures involving the Warrens' room of cursed objects are hinted at in the closing scenes.

“The Warrens had a very full life with lots of interesting stories,” Wan said. “We’ve only captured a small portion of what they dabbled in.”
