As Sholay celebrates its 50th anniversary, director Ramesh Sippy discusses the film’s timeless allure, its impact on the Indian culture, and sheds light on why some magic is impossible to replicate. Released in 1975, the film featured Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, Hema Malini, and Jaya Bachchan, and has been defined as “the greatest cast ever assembled and the greatest story ever told.”

Sholay’s story and its rich cast gave birth to deeply emerging parts of Indian pop culture. Phrases like “Jai-Veeru ki jodi,” “Gabbar Singh,” and “Thakur” became timeless references in the Indian society. Initially, the film performed poorly in the box office but later became the highest-grossing Indian film ever, and still today boasts the title for the most tickets ever sold for an Indian movie.

Sippy appreciates the work of Salim-Javed for bringing the story alive, yet accepts that there is no hidden formula to its success. “If you find out, let me know too,” he chuckles. “The magic of Sholay cannot be decoded—it must simply be enjoyed.”

In celebration, the Sholay will be restored to 4K resolution for its 50th anniversary and will be screened at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, thanks to the Film Heritage Foundation and Sippy Films Pvt. Ltd. The date for the premiere in India has not been announced.
