With newbies Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda in the lead roles, Mohit Suri's romance drama Saiyaara had a huge opening weekend, earning an astounding ₹83 crore (India net) in just three days. As of right now, the movie is one of the highest-grossing Bollywood premieres of 2025.
The weekend of the blockbuster debut
In defiance of all predictions, Saiyaara made ₹21 crore on Day 1 and ₹25 crore on Saturday. Early projections indicate that the movie made a staggering ₹37 crore on Sunday, its highest earnings to date, bringing its total earnings for the first weekend to ₹83 crore.
In addition to surpassing Mohit Suri's previous hits, such as Ek Villain (₹16 crore) and Aashiqui 2 (₹6.1 crore), Saiyaara is currently securely ranked among the top five openers of 2025, trailing only Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava (₹121.43 crore), Housefull 5 (₹91.83 crore), and Sikandar (₹86.44 crore).
An Achievement for Newcomers
Saiyaara is unique since it broke records even though it had two debutantes in the main parts. Now, it has surpassed the lifetime earnings of other debut-focused films like Student of the Year (₹70 crore) and is getting near to Dhadak (₹95.12 crore), making it the largest opening weekend for a Bollywood film starring newbies.
Given the recent low box office results of other famous children, most notably Shanaya Kapoor's debut feature Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, which failed to reach ₹2 crore in its first week, this milestone is especially noteworthy.
According to trade observers, the film's heartfelt storytelling, soulful soundtrack, and the novel pairing of Ahaan and Aneet are the main reasons for its popularity. Saiyaara's Sunday occupancy percentage was an astounding 71.18%, with evening shows in Hindi-speaking areas reaching a peak of 79.32% and 88.15%.
Recently, director Mohit Suri stated in an interview:
- Pain is a necessary part of love. You can't feel love if it's not real. I have a stronger belief in it than I do in it.
- Audiences appear to have responded well to his realistic take on romance, particularly younger viewers who are searching for authenticity on the big screen.
Bollywood versus Hollywood
The movie has even performed better at the Indian box office than a number of well-known Hollywood productions. It is already surpassing the earnings of James Gunn's Superman and is getting closer to Jurassic World Rebirth, which made ₹86.6 crore in just two weeks.
Next Steps?
Saiyaara is well-positioned to maintain its domination throughout the week thanks to its incredible collections, high occupancy, and positive word-of-mouth. The film's ability to shatter more milestones and maybe reach the ₹100 crore milestone in the near future will be determined by Monday's box office results.
