Suriya’s latest film, Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, has failed to maintain its box office momentum despite a weekend release. After a promising opening on May 1—Labour Day—the film saw a consistent dip in collections over the next two days.

By Day 3, Retro earned ₹3.37 crore from its morning and afternoon shows, as per data from industry tracker Sacnilk. Although evening and night shows are expected to push this figure higher, the drop from Day 2 is noticeable. The film's total domestic collection now stands at ₹30.37 crore, though the final tally will be updated later tonight.

Despite being a weekend, Retro drew only 36.65% occupancy in Tamil-speaking regions on Saturday. In Telugu territories, it saw even lower occupancy at 17.84%, largely due to stiff competition from Nani’s HIT 3. Chennai continues to lead in terms of screenings and occupancy, followed by Bengaluru and Coimbatore. Hyderabad, meanwhile, recorded the highest number of shows for the Telugu version.

Retro features Suriya and Pooja Hegde in lead roles and boasts a strong ensemble cast including Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran, Nassar, and Prakash Raj, with a special cameo by Shriya Saran. Produced by 2D Entertainment and Stone Bench Films, the movie marks the first collaboration between Suriya and director Karthik Subbaraj.

In the film, Suriya plays a gangster. Ahead of the release, the actor addressed fans, clarifying that though his character smokes on screen, he does not endorse smoking in real life. “I’m only smoking for the film. Please don’t try it. Once you start, it’s hard to quit,” he said.

Suriya was last seen in Kanguva, directed by Siva, which underperformed at the box office. With Retro also facing a downward trend, the actor may need a stronger comeback to regain box office dominance.
