Kangana Ranaut's upcoming solo directorial debut, Emergency, is set to hit theaters this month after facing multiple delays. The film, based on the 1975 Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, explores a politically charged period in Indian history. Kangana, who also stars as Indira Gandhi in the movie, recently revealed her interaction with Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, granddaughter of the late leader.

Priyanka Gandhi's Response

During an interview with PTI, Kangana was asked whether the Gandhi family had reached out to her about the film. The actor-turned-filmmaker shared, “No, they didn’t reach out to me. However, I met Priyanka Gandhi in Parliament, and she complimented me on my work and my hair. So, I mentioned Emergency to her and suggested she watch it. She replied, ‘Okay, maybe.’ I think if they are open to accepting history, they might appreciate the film.”

Kangana's Past Comments on the Gandhis

Last year, Kangana was elected as an MP from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi constituency on a BJP ticket. In interviews, she was vocal about her disdain for the Congress party, calling its legacy rooted in nepotism. She had previously described Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi as “nepo kids” and likened their behavior to being “as if they landed from Mars.” Kangana drew parallels between her struggles against nepotism in Bollywood and what she perceives as dynastic politics within the Congress party.

About Emergency

Co-produced by Zee Studios and Kangana's Manikarnika Films, Emergency is a political thriller that marks Kangana’s solo directorial debut. The ensemble cast includes Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhary, and Milind Soman. The film will release in cinemas on January 17, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency.

Kangana’s approach to the historical drama and her outreach to Priyanka Gandhi highlight the contrasting political perspectives that make Emergency a significant cinematic venture this year. Whether Priyanka Gandhi ultimately watches the film remains to be seen.
