Olivia Hussey, the iconic actress best known for her portrayal of Juliet Capulet in Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 Romeo and Juliet, has passed away at the age of 73. Hussey won a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer for her mesmerizing performance in the role. She also became a beloved figure in the horror genre for her work in Black Christmas and lent her voice to Superman: The Animated Series.

Hussey was just 17 years old when Romeo & Juliet was released, and her performance sparked controversy, particularly due to the topless love scene with Romeo (Leonard Whiting).

Her death was announced on Instagram with the following message:

"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Olivia Hussey Eisley, who went peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on December 27th. Olivia was a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her. Born on April 17th, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Olivia lived a life full of passion, love, and dedication to the arts, spirituality, and kindness towards animals."

In 1991, Hussey married singer, songwriter, and actor David Glen Eisley. The family shared:

"Olivia leaves behind a loving family — her children, Alex, Max, and India, her husband of 35 years David Glen Eisley, and grandson Greyson, and a legacy of love that will forever be cherished in our hearts. As we grieve this immense loss, we also celebrate Olivia’s enduring impact on our lives and the industry."

Reports indicate that Hussey's death was due to cancer. She also had a prolific career in horror, starring in Black Christmas, alongside Margot Kidder, John Saxon, and Andrea Martin. She earned a lasting place in the hearts of horror fans for her roles in It and Psycho IV. Her voice work in Star Wars video games, as well as her portrayal of Talia al Ghul in Batman Beyond and Superman: The Animated Series, further added to her illustrious career.

Hussey and her Romeo and Juliet co-star Leonard Whiting filed a lawsuit against Paramount over the controversial bedroom scene, though their case was dismissed. Despite the controversy, Hussey’s legacy endures, with new generations discovering her iconic performances in Romeo and Juliet and Black Christmas.
